Hi, I’m Sarah.

If you want your writing to have the best chance possible, great storytelling matters. Evocative, compelling writing resonates with readers, and that inspires them to share your work with others.

The goal of this newsletter is twofold: To help you elevate your writing, and to help you navigate the worlds of publishing.

I was raised to worship at the altar of the intellect. I studied at Sarah Lawrence College and graduated magna cum laude from George Washington University with a BA and partial Masters in social psychology, with a focus on psychoneuroimmunology and community health, through the lens of the AIDS epidemic. When I burned out from grieving dozens of friends, I shifted into the theatre world and attended Yale School of Drama for stage management. Later, I attended Goddard College’s MFA in Creative Writing program (fiction).

After a brief stint at Simon & Schuster, I landed in the television world, writing and later producing for VH1, Comedy Central, MuchMusic and Alliance Atlantis. I’ve taken Robert McKee’s Story Seminar, as well as a host of writing and film production workshops. In the 1990s, I was head writer for the web’s first entertainment magazine, Entertainment Drive, and I content-designed and ghostwrote several of the first official celebrity websites (Cindy Crawford, Britney Spears and others). That was followed by stints as a print music journalist and film critic for the now-defunct Reel.com. More recently, I’ve written for Tiny Buddha, Jane Friedman’s blog, Lion’s Roar, Writers Digest, the Brevity blog and Eckhart Tolle’s website.

I was born in Princeton, New Jersey, and I currently live on the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples and the Snuneymuxw First Nation on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

The Counterintuitive Guide

In 2010, I experienced an episode of profound grace, and it transformed the way I live in the world. For the next seven years, I took notes as insight after insight arose. I write about these at The Counterintuitive Guide to Life.
